What EPA announced

EPA said it had granted a petition addressing PFOA, PFNA and PFDA formed during fluorination of plastic containers. The announcement described commencing an appropriate proceeding under TSCA Section 6 and seeking information on container uses, alternatives and measures to address risk. That language describes further agency work.

Why the distinction matters

A petition, a request for information, a proposed rule and a final enforceable restriction are different instruments. Treating them as interchangeable makes a regulatory timeline unreliable. A reader examining a claim that a process has been banned should ask for the specific operative document, its effective date and any subsequent court action.

How this file should be updated

Future coverage should record each development as a new dated event and retain the original notice for context. A later policy change should not be silently written into a historical headline. This article explains the 2024 announcement; it does not assert that the announcement itself imposed a blanket prohibition on every fluorinated container.
