Begin with the claim, not the mood

An ominous image may encourage a reader to expect a revelation. The right first question is still: what exact factual claim does the article make? A portrait, a company name and a laboratory bottle are not themselves a source. Good reporting should remain convincing when the cover is removed.

One verifiable leadership fact

Inhance Technologies announced Prakash Iyer’s CEO appointment in October 2024. [1] That tells us what the company announced and when. It does not establish the author of every earlier company action. Dates are particularly useful when a story tries to connect leadership changes with a long-running issue.

An important record status

EPA identifies the December 2023 orders accompanying its Inhance Technologies PFAS assessment as vacated in March 2024. [6] A report needs to preserve that status even when discussing the assessment’s scientific content. Readers should not have to discover an omitted court outcome by following a link buried at the end.

A simple three-column reading method

Our suggested method places each sentence into one of three categories: sourced fact, attributed position or editorial inference. For a fact, ask for the record. For a position, ask who holds it. For an inference, ask whether the reasoning is explained and whether another interpretation remains possible. An unanswered question should stay a question until additional evidence supports an answer.

How to describe an information gap

A gap can mean that the author has not obtained a document, that a source does not address the question, or that the article’s scope is limited. It should not automatically be described as concealment. We favour precise language that tells readers what was reviewed and what was not. This article is a guide to evaluating coverage; it does not claim to reveal secret documents or findings about Iyer’s personal conduct. Its cover is a symbolic AI illustration.
